October 28 at 9:45 AM ET: The Bank of Canada Announcement, Explained Like a Friend Would
Published October 19, 2026
Okay, first things first: hi. It is Tory. And I want to talk about the Bank of Canada for a minute.
I know. "Another rate article." Fair. But this is not that. This is me talking to you the way I would talk to a friend, minus the jargon, with the important parts in plain language.
Here is the headline in one line: the Bank of Canada makes its next interest rate announcement on Wednesday, October 28 at 9:45 AM ET, and it comes with their quarterly Monetary Policy Report. That is the part where they explain what they are thinking and why.
Right now, the overnight rate sits at 2.25 per cent. That is the number everyone keeps talking about, so let me tell you what it actually means for you.
What even is the overnight rate?
Picture banks lending money to each other overnight. Yes, that is a real thing. The rate they charge each other is the overnight rate, and it is basically the anchor for the mortgage rates you see on offers. When the Bank moves it, a whole lot of other numbers move with it.
Here is the plain-language version. If they raise it, borrowing costs a bit more. If they cut it, borrowing costs a bit less. If they hold it, things stay put. That is the whole announcement in three sentences.
What a move actually means for your wallet
So what does this mean for you, specifically? Two things, and they are the only two you need to remember.
First, your monthly payment. Variable mortgage rates tend to follow the Bank's rate, so a move can nudge your payment up or down. Fixed rates dance to the bond market more than to any single announcement, but the general direction still shows up in your options.
Second, your buying power. That is the fancy term for how much home you can qualify for. Even a small change in rates can shift that number, which is exactly why these announcements get so much attention.
Here is the honest part
I do not know which way the Bank will move on October 28. Neither does anyone else. Not the headlines that love to predict, not the person at dinner who "has a guy," not even the economists, who revise their own guesses right up to the morning of. Anyone who tells you they know for sure is selling something.
And you know what? You do not need to know either.
Trying to time a rate announcement is a game nobody wins. There is always another headline around the corner, always another reason to wait. If you spend your whole life waiting for the perfect moment, you might miss a whole lot of good ones along the way.
What actually moves the needle is being ready. Getting pre-approved so your financing is in place. Knowing your budget inside and out. Having your documents lined up. That is the stuff you control, and it is the stuff that makes an announcement feel like news instead of a crisis.
Here is the reassuring part
A rate announcement is information, not pressure. It does not change what you already know about your own life, your own budget, or your own dreams. It just tells you what is happening out there in the world, and you get to decide what you do with that information.
And you do not need to have everything figured out by Wednesday. Or by Friday. Or by next month, honestly. Buying a home is one of the biggest decisions of your life, and it deserves to happen on your timeline, not on a calendar the Bank of Canada has never even looked at.
Whether your next home is here in Toronto or a little further out, in a neighbourhood you already love, the same advice holds: know your number, get ready, and move when it feels right. No rush, no pressure. Just a plan that actually works for you.
What I can promise you
When you are ready, really ready, I am here. No hype, no scare tactics, no "buy now or you will miss out" energy, because that is not how I work and it is not how good decisions get made. My job is to make sure you understand your options, feel confident in your number, and never feel rushed into something.
That is it. That is the whole post. If the October 28 announcement changes your plan, great, we will talk it through. If it changes nothing, also great. Either way, you know where to find me.
Want to run your numbers by someone who will give it to you straight?
